Lots of college courses but no degree?

And you've accumulated enough transfer credits that you really don't want to start over in another degree program. If that does sound like you, then IWU has just the right degree program for you: the Associate of Science degree in General Studies.
What is a degree in General Studies?
It's exactly what you need. It recognizes that you've learned a little about a lot of things instead of a lot about a little thing. It's a degree that says you've had a well-rounded general education at the college level. But most importantly, it's a degree that finishes what you started and lays the groundwork for your next educational or career step.

That's right! IWU's Associate of Science in General Studies degree is custom-tailored to your specific needs. It allows you to select exactly what courses you want to take to finish your degree, as long as they meet our graduation requirements. What could be better?!
How does it work?
After you apply to the program, our staff performs a comprehensive analysis of your college transcripts to determine what remaining course work you need to complete in order to earn your degree in General Studies. Then they work with you to select the most interesting courses we offer to meet those graduation requirements and prepare a degree completion plan that's custom tailored to you. We then register you for the courses in your plan and you're on your way to your college degree. It's that simple!
Should I pursue the Associate's or Bachelor's Degree?
If you have already completed 60 or more transferable credit-hours, you should probably consider the benefits of going directly into the Bachelor of Science in General Studies degree program. Since both degree programs require that you take at least 30 credit-hours from IWU and complete both the Liberal Arts requirements and a Concentration, it may actually work out better for you to skip the Associate's degree and immediately begin working toward your bachelor's degree. Will it qualify for financial aid?
In most cases, this approach will qualify you for federal Stafford loans, because you are enrolling in a degree-seeking program. Once you complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online, our Financial Aid Office will work with you to ensure that your course of study meets federal financial aid standards. Typically, any U.S. citizen who is not in default under a previous student loan will qualify for the Stafford loan program.
Admission Requirements
The admission requirements for the Associate of Science degree in General Studies are:
- Proof of high school graduation or GED certification.
- Submission of all required items for the admissions process as outlined in the "application procedures" section of the online application or application packet.
- A minimum of two years of full-time work or life experience beyond high school.
Curriculum
The curriculum for the Associate of Science in General Studies degree is custom-tailored to your needs and preferences from our extensive list of elective courses or dropping-in to undergraduate degree program courses to meet the following graduation requirements:
- Successful completion of 62 credit-hours, of which at least 30 credit-hours must be completed at Indiana Wesleyan University, with a grade-point average (GPA) of 2.0 or above.
- A concentration in one subject area of 15 credit-hours, of which at least 9 credit-hours must be completed at Indiana Wesleyan University, with a GPA of 2.0 or above.
- Completion of 23 credit-hours of Liberal Arts course work, consisting of:
- at least 9 credit-hours in Humanities (literature, art, music, philosophy, etc.)
- at least 3 credit-hours in Biblical Literature
- at least 3 credit-hours in English Composition (equivalent to ENG140 or ENG141)
- at least 3 credit-hours in Social Science (economics, history, political science, psychology, sociology, etc.)
- at least 2 credit-hours in Physical Education
- at least 3 credit-hours in Science or Mathematics
- Completion of 3 credit-hours of required electives, UNV111 and UNV201
- Payment of all Tuition and Fees
Areas of Concentration
- Business — courses with ACC, ADM, BUS, ECO, or MGT prefixes, except ADM 400
- Communications — courses with ENG, WRI, and COM prefixes, as well as MGT 205
- Criminal Justice — courses with a CRJ prefix and SOC 246, PSY 365, and PHE 366
- Computer Information Technology — courses with CIT and BIS prefixes
- Entrepreneurship — ECO 300, two or more courses in accounting, one or more courses in human resources (MGT435 or MGT490), one or more non-human resources MGT courses, and ADM or BUS courses.
- Fine Arts — courses with ART and MUS prefixes and foreign language courses
- History – courses with HST prefixes and REL225
- Human Services — courses with SOC and PSY prefixes, and CRJ 268
- Liberal Arts — courses with BIO, ECO, HST, POL, PSY, PHL, REL, AND SOC prefixes
- Life Sciences – courses with BIO, CHE, EAR and PHE140, PHE141, PHE362, PHE366, with coursework from at least two separate areas required.
- Marketing – courses with MKG prefix, and MGT421
- Mathematics – courses with MAT prefixes and ADM320
- Religious Studies – courses with BIL, REL and PHL prefixes
- Individualized Concentration — Permits customized concentration with approval of General Studies Faculty
Program Costs
The cost per credit hour is $220.00 and the total program costs will vary, depending upon how many courses you must complete in order to meet graduation requirements. The cost of each specific course, including books and materials can be found with the course descriptions (the tuition costs listed on this page are for stand alone electives only). Graduation fee is $75.
Accreditation
Indiana Wesleyan University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission* and a member of the North Central Association. In addition, IWU's educational programs are accredited by the Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB) and the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
How to Apply
In order to successfully apply for the IWU Associate's degree program:
- Complete the IWU Associate's degree Application for Admission. Be sure the information you provide is accurate.
- Complete the Request for an Official Transcript* form. We must receive all official transcripts or equivalent documentary evidence of your high school graduation or GED completion before accepting you to the IWU Associate's degree program.
