Electives - Electives Courses
Students choose to take electives courses for several important reasons - some because of student interest and others because of student need. Indiana Wesleyan University provides both online and onsite electives that can fulfill both needs and wants.
In choosing electives courses based on interest, students can do so because they are interested in a subject in which they have had little or no experience. For instance, a student could choose ART134 Photography from the wide selection of electives courses available at IWU based on a desire to learn how to use a camera with manual settings. Various reasons behind that choice may be totally utilitarian in that the student may want to capture the growing years of his/her child. However, the purpose may be entirely aesthetic in that the student may enjoy the beauty of nature and simply want to learn how to capture that beauty in a variety of artistic ways. Another student may choose the photography course from among the electives courses because he/she already knows a fair amount about photography, and desires to expand that store of knowledge.
On the other hand, the purpose for choosing a course from the listing of electives courses at IWU could be based solely on need. In other words, a student may choose a course mainly for the purpose of completing the required number of credit hours in order to graduate. Determined by the various degrees, students may choose electives to fulfill required credit hours. Obviously, within the listing of electives courses, students are usually free to choose courses that are of interest to them.
In choosing electives courses, students also need to consider fulfilling various liberal arts graduation requirements. Almost all colleges and universities within the United States require that a certain number of electives courses credit hours be taken from a specified list of liberal arts courses or subjects. Generally, those liberal arts areas are in the Arts, the Humanities, and the Sciences. Students need to take great care in choosing their electives courses as they seek to fulfill those requirements.
As noted above, at Indiana Wesleyan University, students may choose from either online or onsite courses. Each type of course has it advantages. Our online courses are available throughout the United States and even the world. Because online courses are asynchronous, students may "attend" class based on their own schedules. In contrast, onsite courses are time- and place-based, providing face-to-face contact for students and instructors.
