Electives - General Education Classes

Many busy adult professionals are seeking a way to earn or complete a degree without taking time away from their job. As a result, a large number of these adult learners are enrolling in Indiana Wesleyan University 's College of Adult and Professional Studies. Students aspiring to advance their career through this program can do so by completing 124 semester credit hours to obtain a bachelor degree. A number of General Education Classes are offered to lead the adult learner to the completion of his/her degree. Within the required hours of General Education Classes, students take 30 credit hours of liberal arts courses. Most baccalaureate degrees require 40-45 hours within the student's major. Additional hours needed to reach the 124 may be comprised of General Education Classes.

The College of Adult and Professional Studies at IWU offers General Education Classes in a wide variety of subjects. In the arts and music area courses include Art Appreciation, Drawing, Photography, and Music Appreciation. General Education Classes in the area of sociology and psychology include Psychology of Personality, Principles of Sociology, Social Problems, Marriage and Family, and Cultural Anthropology. These subjects, along with history and political science, fall under the social sciences category within the liberal arts areas.

Other General Education Classes that also fulfill liberal arts requirements include Introduction to Communication, Speech Communication, Introduction to Mass Communication, Creative Writing, and English Composition II. The liberal arts requirements in philosophy, religion, or Biblical literature may be satisfied with General Education Classes including New Testament Survey, Old Testament Survey, Ethics, Themes in Biblical Literature, Methods in Bible Study, and American Religious Issues.

Within the liberal arts courses, mathematics and science courses comprise another area. Some General Education Classes that Indiana Wesleyan University offers in this category include General Mathematics, Earth Science, and Environmental Conservation.

Additionally, several other subjects and courses that are not liberal arts courses still fulfill requirements for General Education Classes. Courses in this category include Software Tools, Management and Employee Relations, Introduction to Personnel Supervision, Challenge Education, Career Development, and Personal Finance.

As students plan their liberal arts selections from General Education Classes, it is helpful for them to meet with an academic advisor. The academic advisor is able to help the students be certain that they are meeting all of their graduation requirements. Students who don't plan ahead may find that while they have met the required 124 credit hours, they lack sufficient hours in one or more areas specified by the university as graduation requirements.
