Electives - Music Appreciation

Welcome to the world of Music Appreciation! We hope you will instantly feel the aura of a beautifully orchestrated setting in which to enhance your learning. IWU will help make your educational dream a reality by offering you this exciting course via the Internet. Music Appreciation(Mus170) is one of many courses that will provide a means for you to gain knowledge for credit while expanding your cultural enrichment.

If you are particularly interested in taking a course that will fulfill credit in Liberal Arts, Music Appreciation is your answer. This will count as 3 credit hours toward the 124 total hours required for graduation. It is also offered onsite.

If you simply want to have a better understanding of the arts, you will benefit from Music Appreciation with its combination of history and aesthetic beauty.

As an IWU student you will enjoy the convenience of going to school anytime during the day, a system described as asynchronous learning. You will be able to exchange ideas, ask questions, and learn from your classmates and instructor inside the Music Appreciation discussion room. How exciting it will be to interact with students from distant parts of the country, or even from around the world, who will share ideas and experiences from varying personal and professional backgrounds. You can enjoy the convenience of working from your home, office, or even on the road while enjoying the uplifting atmosphere provided through Music Appreciation.

Allow yourself to be introduced to this wonderful course that will provide a review of the history of music with the interest of supplying you and your classmates with aesthetic and cultural experiences. It will seek to help you understand and appreciate the role of music in Western Culture -- thus the title, Music Appreciation. A concentrated effort will be made to provide you with an introduction to lifelong learning, critical thinking, informed consumerism, and appreciation regarding the musical arts.

This cultural journey will help you identify and recognize music of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods. It will prepare you to be more conversant regarding musical styles of the 20th century and non-Western culture, as well as Jazz and The American Musical.

You will build your Music Appreciation repertoire around basic style characteristics such as rhythm, texture, melody, and mood. Your understanding of symphonies, concertos, and sonatas will broaden, and your "listening ear" will become more attuned to some wonderful music you may have previously overlooked in your less attentive moments of music appreciation.

During your musical enrichment trip you will have the opportunity to listen to some fantastic music via the CD's that come with the text. Hopefully you will become identified with those students who have completed this course sharing the testimony that their presupposed idea of a "boring Music Appreciation class" was transformed by an exciting musical journey they will never forget.
